The Y2Klub: Xiang Peng, The Rising Star At The National Games

This edition of Y2Klub features 14-year-old Xiang Peng, the dark horse who has some eye-catching performance at the 13th National Games.

Don't feel bad if you haven't heard of Xaing Peng. The 14-year-old is a member of Zhejiang provincial table tennis team and has not competed in major international competitions. He attracted media's attention after defeating national team athlete Yu Ziyang 3-1 and having an intense 5-game match with grand-slam athlete Zhang Jike in the team competition at his first National Games in 2017. Despite the fact that he was nowhere near the podium of the National Games, he did not go home empty handed. As he received 5 pieces of rubber and advice from Zhang Jike which is considerably an uplifting experience for a 14-year-old.

Xiang Peng was sent to take table tennis classes at a young age because he was too energetic. After a few years, he represented his primary school to win medals in competitions. In 2014, at the age of 11, he won 2 gold (boy's team and singles) and 1 silver (boy's doubles) at the Provincial Games of Zhejiang and entered the provincial team. His coach, former national team member, Wang Jianjun thinks that Xiang Peng is a versatile table tennis player. However China never runs out of talents like Xiang Peng, therefore going one step at a time and make to the national team is the biggest goal for him at this moment.

Here are 2 interviews about Xiang Peng one was conducted during the National Games by CCTV 5 while the other was produced after the Games by Zhejiang Satellite TV.
