Congratulations to the teams that have made to the knock-out stage! It's the last day for Stage 1 of the men's team and women's team competitions. The top 2 teams of each group, a total of 8 teams from each field, qualify to the knock-off stage. Here is the detailed results for today and the schedule for the team quarterfinals take place on 30 Aug.
The highlights of today is definitely the men's team competition between PLA and Beijing (Watch the competition here). Ma Long had a really good shape at the beginning of the competition. Despite Zhou Yu's powerful backhand attack, Ma Long was able to play skillfully and won 3:0. The second match was between 2 promising young athletes, Wang Chuqin and Fan Zhendong. Fan Zhendong's experience in international competition edge over Wang and won 3:1. The third match was critical and Xu Chenhao was aggressive and expressive in the match and defeated Yan An, the men's singles champion at 2017 Hungarian Open, 3:1. The climax of the match was not as exciting as most of us expect as Fan Zhendong romped to victory with 3:0 over Ma Long. It seems that Ma Long decided to go conservative as putting his effort in the next match against Tianjin may be more reasonable for him and the team. Take notice of the fact that it was the round-robin stage, teams do not need to win every match but to win strategically. As a result Team PLA won 3-1 and secured the spot of top qualifier in Group D.
The home team, Team Tianjin did not make to the knock-off stage in both the women's team and men's team competition. In the women's side, Heilongjiang won over Team Tianjin with a definite 3-0 and ended the home team's desire on playing in front of the home crowd (Watch the replay of the match here).
Whereas the men's side, Team Tianjin has tried their very best to earn as much points as they could. Ma Te, the chopper representing Team Tianjin, had a very close match against Yan An and won 3:2 with aggressive loop in between his chops. However Team Beijing is too strong to be defeated. Ma Long secured 2 points by winning 3:0 over 16-year-old Yu Xinhang (the youngest CTTSL player in 2016) and Ma Te. The third match was played between 17-year-old Wang Chuqin and 33-year-old Hao Shuai. Wang Chuqin was agile and powerful. He won the first 2 games easily. When we thought the youngster was going to take the point, Hao Shuai proved that the experience of a veteran is crucial in the competition. With many variations, he leveled the game by winning the next 2 games but fell short to win the decisive game losing 10:12. (Watch the replay here part 1, 2)
It's day 2 only and the results are ready full of surprise. For the women's side, the contenders of the champion, Shandong and Liaoning are out after losing 2 matches on day 1. Sun Yingsha leads Team Hebei to the quarterfinals and she has not lost a match in the team event. PLA won over Beijing despite Ding Ning winning 2 points for the team on day 1.
Whereas the men's side, the must-watch match has to be PLA Vs Beijing on day 2. The 2 'superpowers' made to the next stage. Let's hope they will play well and encounter in the finals again. The underdogs team Henan made to the quarterfinals upsetting Team Hebei. They won over Team Hebei on day 1 and posed some challenges to team Shanghai as well on day 2. While team Hebei, one of the favourite, fail to win a competition in the team event. It's very disappointing to the team eespecially Liang Jingkun, the key player of the team. It's time for them to leave the past behind and prepare for other events. Team Shandong managed to get to the quarterfinals but Zhang Jike is not in good shape. His speed has slowed down a bit and is not able to cover the wide angle shots which he used to play. There are times that athletes are not at their best form. However their fighting spirit and persistence shall always be praised and remembered. Let's see whether he will get better in the team quarterfinals against PLA and singles event.
