13th Chinese National Games: Day 5 Recap & Matches of Day 6

Day 5, half way through the competition, Team Sichuan and Team Shanghai won the women's team and men's titles respectively! Do your predictions match the results? Leave your comment in the comment box below. There will be mixed doubles, women's singles and men's singles tomorrow. Read the following post which gives you information about today's result and tomorow's schedule.

The results of the team finals is out of my predictions. For the women's side, the strong teams, Team Shandong and Team Liaoning, were out in stage 1. Whereas in the men's side, Sichuan made to the finals with no big names on their team.

We have also seen upcoming young athletes having outstanding performances at their first National Games. Sun Yingsha from Team Hebei led their team to quarterfinals. It is quite an achievement for the very young team. There is also 14-year-old Xiang Peng from Zhejiang men's team who lost to Zhang Jike 2:3 in stage 1 of the team competition. Despite the loss, his eye-catching performance has received compliments and a gift (5 Zhang Jike's rubber) from Zhang Jike.

In the women's team finals, Wang Manyu representing Team Heilongjiang fought hard against Zhu Yuling. She was trailing 2 games behind but comeback winning 2 games. The 5th games was very close. Wang Manyu took the lead for most of the time until 9-9, she did not handle Zhu Yuling's serves well and settled for women's team silver medal. One has said there are three types of tears on the podium, the tear of joy for the champion, tear of disappointment for the runner up and the tear of lost and found for the third. However the silver medal should be a sweet silver for Team Heilongjiang as they have made history today. This is their best national games results at the table tennis women's team event. Team Sichuan is very happy about winning the team champion again after winning the team national champion in 2016 Chinese Nationals. Team Beijing managed to win bronze without Ding Ning on the lineup today. They won over Team Hubei 3-1.

Team Shanghai has no problem at all in the finals. They romped to victory winning Team Sichuan 3-0. Team Shanghai has won the last 3 men's team national champion from 2014-2016. Winning the 13th National Games team champion was just icing on the cake. It is also their first national Games title since 1965 (2nd National Games) for the Shanghai men's team. Xu Xin, Shang Kun and Zhao Zihao each won a point and Shanghai men's team are the 13th National Games Men's Team Champion. The bronze medal match is a competition between Team PLA and Team Guangdong. Team PLA put Zhou Yu on the no.3 player spot to secure the point at the third match. Guangdong also rearranged their lineup. They swap the order of Zhou Qihao and Zhang Chao. As a result, Fan Zhendong earned 2 points for the team (won over Zhang Chao 3-2 and Lin Gaoyuan 3-1) and clinched the men's team bronze medal for the team. Fan Zhendong appeared to be a bit tired especially in the match against Zhang Chao. We hope him restore his energy soon to play the mixed doubles partnering Zhu Yuling tomorrow.

There are teams that are anchored by world-class players but did not end up in the way they like. While there are also underdogs who make their names at the Games. After all, team champion is not about a person. It comes down to the overall strength of the team and a good day on the competition day.

Congratulations to Sichuan Team (women) and Team Shanghai (men) again for winning the team titles. It is the unpredictability and the incredible shots that have made the National Games table tennis competitions so captivating. There will be mixed doubles, men's singles and women's singles tomorrow. You can re-visit the previews which will help you to know the contenders of the events. Last but not least, here is the TV guide for following the competition.

Matches of Day 6 (2 September) (GMT+8)
The highlights of day 6 must be the mixed doubles competition between Guangdong duo / the reigning mixed double national champion , Lin Gaoyuan / Liu Shiwen and the PLA partnership Zhou Yu / Mu Zi. CCTV 5 will start streaming the mixed doubles competition at 14:30 and the match will be the second match to be streamed. CCTV5 will also be streaming the following matches. Although these are round 1 of the events, matches can be very exciting especially the match between Xu Ruifeng and Xu Xin. Xu Ruifeng lost 0-3 to Xu Xin but their counter-loops are just enjoyable to watch. We might see more of that again tomorrow.

    1. CCTV5 App is showing table tennis event while CCTV5 TV channel is showing other evens. I am not sure whether you can use the CCTV5 App links but if it does not work, CCTV will upload the video later today. I will put the link to the video once they have uploaded so that you can catch up the matches. There are always changes in the broadcast plan so sometimes I may miss out the changes and fail to update the blog.
