More than the Marvellous 12 -- Team Draws of the Chinese National Games Prelims

We are always amazed by the dominance of the Chinese table tennis team but seldom do we see the depth of the team. With only three being up in the Olympics and five in the Worlds, many magnificent Chinese players do not get the chance to play internationally. Now we will have the chance to see some of the less-popular but great players and newcomers playing in the prelims of the Chinese National Games.

The Prelims of the Chinese National Games, Table Tennis
The prelims of the table tennis event will be held from 23 March to 29 March in An Shan, Liaoning Province, the city where many great players like Ma Long, Fang Bo and Li Xiaoxia are from. There are seven events, namely, men's team, women's team, men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.Players will represent their home province to compete in the National Games. This is also the first time that players are allowed to pair up with players from different provinces in the doubles events.


The draw ceremony of the team's event is held today and the followings are the results.
Men's Team
Group 1: Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Tibet, Xinjiang, Jilin, Hunan, Macau
Group 2: Beijing, Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Tianjin, Chongqing, Inner-Mongolia
Group 3: Heilongjiang, Fujian, Qinghai, Yunan, Guizhou, Hainan, Ningxia, Anhui
Group 4: Liaoning, Hebei, Guangdong, Gugangxi, Sichuan, Shanxi, Hong Kong

Women's Team
Group 1: Heilongjiang, Hennan, Anhui, Ningxia, Shanghai, Guangdong
Group 2: Hebei, Jiangsu, Hubei, Chongqing, Zhejiang, Hong Kong
Group 3: PLA, Tibet, Tianjin, Hunan, Hainan, Xinjiang, Macau
Group 4: Shandong, Yunan, Fujian, Jilin, Gugangxi, Jiangxi, Inner-Mongolia

A round robin will play within a group under the best of 5 matches (New Swaythling Cup system, 5 singles). The top 3 teams of each group will qualify to the next round, while the top 4 teams  in the Chinese Nationals in 2016 (Men: Shanghai, Shandong, PLA and Jiangsu; Women: Shanxi, Liaoning, Beijing, Sichuan) will directly enter the next round.

Big Names expected in the prelims of the team event
For the men's field, Team Beijing is definitely the team to watch. With the grand-slam player Ma Long, the champion of the Hungarian Open Yan An and the youngest player in the A team of the national team, Wang Chuqin in the line-up, it is hard to imagine if they are not in the next round. Also in Group 2, Team Tianjin has veteran Hao Shuai and the amazing chopper, Ma Te fighting strong. Team Tianjin as the host of this year's Chinese National Games, they will fight hard to get the spot to play in front of their home crowd. Group 4 is considered as the 'group of death'. It is very likely to be a close competition among team Liaoning, Hebei, Guangdong, Sichuan and Hong Kong, especially team Guangdong has Lin Gaoyuan who has earned the spot to the Worlds recently while team Hebei has a bright young player Liang Jingkun in their line-up.

The women's field is also exciting to watch. Team Shandong has the champion of the Qatar Open, Chen Meng and 2014 Youth Olympic champion, Liu Gaoyang in their team.The PLA team has experienced players like Mu Zi and chopper, Hu Limei in their team. Also we cannot overlook team Heilongjiang with potential young players Wang Manyu and Che Xiaoxi in the line-up.

What is the Chinese National Games?
The Chinese National Games is also known as the 'mini-Olympics' in China. It is a national sport event which many Chinese athletes represent their provinces participating in a variety of competitions. It was first held in 1959 and is usually held every four years after the Olympic year. The 13th Chinese National Games will be held in Tianjin in September 2017. It will be a stage for the top players to showcase their ability, also a chance for the young players to challenge the greats,
