Day 2 of the men's team and women's team event came up with quite a breakthrough for Macau women's team. There are 33 teams competing in the preliminary round but not all of them are professional table tennis players.
Macau women's team is among the amateur players, formed by two students and two police, the players usually practice two times a week in their spare time. Team Macau has played 4 Chinese National Games (preliminary round) since Macau returned to China in 1999 but has never won a match until today's 3-2 victory against Team Xinjiang, happy for some but unfortunate for others.
Following up the injury issue from the men's field, Ma Long from Team Beijing is back on stage. He beat Zhang Chi from Team Inner-Mongolia easily by 3-0 and Team Beijing ended the match by 3-0. The result may not tell us a lot, after all, Team Inner-Mongolia is a relatively weak team but it is still a good start! Group 4 is always fun to watch because the teams are starred with potential young athletes. Lin Gaoyuan from Team Guangdong is still recovering from his back pain and did not play in the competition. He might skip the team competition and try to get in shape just in time for the mixed doubles on 26 March. Yesterday Team Guangdong won without Lin but the plot did not work for today. With their veteran Zhang Chao losing 2 points, the team lost by 3-1 to Team Hebei, their biggest competitor in the group. It is a match to recap, especially the match between Zhang Chao and Cui Qinglei, Zhang Chao took the set point in the first set but Cui Qinglei fight back fiercely. Finally Zhang Chao ended the long set by 19-17!
