On 23 June, 2017, in China Open men's singles round of 16, the Chinese National Team coach, Qin Zhijian, Ma Lin and athletes Ma Long, Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong did not understand the new management style of the Chinese Table Tennis Team and made an impulsive decision of forfeiting the competition. In regard to the negative impact brought by this incident, the team has realized the seriousness of the mistake and the disruption posed to society. The team has disappointed the support from all sectors of the community and damaged its great social image as a patriotic, collective and tenacious team which fight for national glory.
This incident revealed the problem of management. The team is deeply distressed and reproachful. We sincerely ask for criticisms from all sectors and apologize to the fans and audience. The Chinese National Table Tennis Team will learn from this incident, reflect on it and strive for achieving excellent results, as well as, strengthen the construction of the team's ideology and pass down and promote the spirit of fight hard and persistent and compete for national glory.
National interest should be placed on the top priority, the Chinese National Table Tennis Team will work hard and strive for excellent results in return to the country's support and the public who love and care about the development of the team and the support Chinese sport industry.
