The Y2Klub: China's Next Top Player, Wang Chuqin

There is a Chinese saying, "As in the Yangtze River, the waves behind ride on the ones before" which implies the younger generations excel the old. We are seeing more and more players of the millennial generation showing up in the international scene. As the 2017 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships will be held on 29 June, the Y2Klub series will introduce some Chinese players of the younger generations. Here's a little introduction of the youngest member of the Chinese National Men's A Team, Wang Chuqin.

Wang Chuqin who goes by 'Big Head' (got the nickname because his head is big but has nothing to do with being conceited), turned 17 this May. He is the first Y2K generation to play in Chinese Table Tennis Super League (CTTSL) in 2015. In the same year, he beat Ma Long 4-3 in the Chinese Nationals men's singles quarterfinals and promoted to the A Team. He also won the boys' singles champion in the first Chinese National Youth Games defeating Lin Gaoyuan, Yu Ziyang and many young talented players.

The left-handed shakehander looks up to his Beijing Team teammate, grand-slam player, Ma Long. His goal is to move up the rank and become one of the top 5 Chinese players by 2019. Many things can happen in the next 2 years but we can see his potential and qualities of becoming a world-class player. In 2016 CTTSL finals, he played fearlessly against Fan Zhendong. Wang Chuqin is powerful, aggressive and all-rounded and should be one of the most anticipated players to watch in the next few years.

As one of the top Chinese junior player, we will see him representing China in many junior competitions such as the 2017 China Junior & Cadet Open, 2017 Asian Junior Championships. He will also compete in T2 APAC and Chinese National Games (Men's Doubles, Men's Singles and Men's Team) this year. Follow the meets as he shows great promise for his future in the sport.
