After 2 days of intense trials, Chen Xingtong and Wang Manyu end up top 2 among 7 players and will join Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen and Zhu Yuling to compete in the 2018 Team World Cup which will be held in London from 22 to 25 February. The Chinese team will be sending Ma Long, Fan Zhendong, Xu Xin, Lin Gaoyuan and Yu Ziyang to compete in the men's team competition.
It is rather shocking that the reigning world rank no.1 player, Chen Meng failed to make the team finding herself in the disappointing 3rd place in the trials but the result is nothing out of the blue. Chen Xingtong and Wang Manyu are 2 anticipating young stars who have emerged to the international scene in recent years. Chen Xingtong winning 2 world tour women's singles title in 2017 came up first place with 5 wins and 1 losses. While the 2017 Austrian Open women's singles champion Wang Manyu took the last spot on the team with the slenderest margin over Chen Meng with an overall result 4 wins and 2 losses. Coach Li Sun talked to the players after the trials that it was just the beginning of 2018 and more trials and competitions are yet to come.
Here is the result of the trials.

Yu Ziyang? How on earth did he make the team before Zhou Yu, Fang Bo and Yan An?
ReplyDeleteLin Gaoyuan, Zhou Yu, Fang Bo and Yan An competed for the 4th spot and Lin Gaoyuan earned that spot in an internal competition. The 5th spot is reported open to U21 players and Yu Ziyang won that spot. Unfortunately there were no live streaming for the trials and I am not sure will there be footage of the trials. I have written the details of the men's trials in my previous articles.
