On 5 January, CTTA announced a new selection policy for 2018 international meets. It has soon become a heated discussion. CCTV 5 produced a program regarding this and it was translated into English.
The program was produced by CCTV 5, a national broadcast channel. Despite the journalists tried to make their comments as objective as possible, part of their job is to speak for CTTA. Therefore, I find some of their arguments not convincing to me and here are some of my thoughts.
I agree with most of the comments made by Li Wujun, a CCTV 5 journalist. The more controversial issue about the new selection is designating a ticket to U21 athletes and opening the door for non-national team athletes. There are many details are yet to be finalized and I think CTTA's explanation issued on 7 January did not make things clear such as the prioritizing of criteria.
Zhou Dao, the female CCTV 5 journalist, sees the new policy is a new form of trials making trials more common and frequent. However I am not convinced about it. As trials should have most athletes to compete under a fair environment but not divided into different age groups or parties (national team members and non-national team members). Let’s say the team world cup selection for the women's team is more reasonable than the men's team approach in my honest opinion. Nonetheless, I do not see the purpose of having trials at every moment as we know it is almost impossible to maintain the best condition for a long time. Putting athletes under pressure will deplete them rather than benefiting them.
There are always worries and resistances when a new policy is introduced, to say the least of it, but I believe the team and CTTA would try their best to defend the Chinese reputation as the strongest table tennis team in the world and achieve good results in competitions.
The details of the new policy is translated in our previous post and my thoughts on the policy are written in the comment box. (Click here)
