The opening round of the team events contributed a day of exciting actions. The newly crowned men's singles national champion Hou Yingchao leading Team Shaanxi was eliminated in the opening hurdle. So did the 3-time men's team champion (2014, 2015, 2016) Shanghai. While strong contenders of the women's team podium, Hebei and Shandong survived the 3-2 nailbiter and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Despite extending his winning streak with a 3-1 victory over Wei Shihao of Heilongjiang, Hou Yingchao's journey at the 2019 Chinese Nationals ends when the team he's representing, Shaanxi, lost 3-1 and bowed out in the men's team round of 32. He said he will take a holiday break since he was exhausted after the grueling competitions at the Nationals.
Xu Xin's absence has certainly hurt the 3-time men's team national champion, Shanghai. The team was 3-1 defeated by Hubei with men's singles bronze medalist of this Nationals, Ma Te, joining the team this year.
Favourite of the men's team national title, PLA, is led by the 2018 men's singles national champion, Liang Jingkun. Although Liang Jingkun was dealing with a shoulder injury and had to call for a medical timeout, he secured 2 points for the team and sealed a 3-1 win over Anhui.
Hebei women's team suffered from a relatively weak third person and had a tough battle against the well-balanced Jiangsu 1. The weak spot on the team posed pressure on Sun Yingsha and He Zhuojia. After losing the doubles match, Sun Yingsha and He Zhuojia had no room for dropping a match and they made it through the round of 16 winning 3-2 narrowly.
Shandong, placing second at last year's Nationals, was on the brink of elimination in the round of 16. The strong performances of the PLA 2 coming back from 0-2 down forced Shandong to play the fifth match. Yet, anchored by Chen Meng, the favourite of the Nationals, Shandong, won 3-2 and proceeded to the quarterfinals.
Women's team quarterfinals and men's team round of 16 and quarterfinals will be coming up tomorrow.
