2019 Chinese Nationals Day 1 (23 Jul): Mixed Doubles in Action

The 2019 Chinese National Championships commenced in Tianjin on 23 July. With over 100 pairs of mixed doubles contested in the qualification rounds, it was an action-packed opening day. 

Yan An / He Zhuojia, playing for Beijing and Hebei respectively, had a tough encounter in round 2 which they played against Xu Chenhao / Chen Ke also a new collaboration representing PLA. The mixed-provinces pair were more consistent while playing the critical points and won 4-1. The pair then played against Hao Shuai / Guo Yan in round 3. Veteran Hao Shuai showed impressive experience and made some good ball placements putting his pair 3-1 up but Yan An / He Zhuojia proved that they are the better pair and won 4-3.

It was also a positive day for Fang Bo / Wang Yidi (Shandong Luneng / Liaoning). The pair had a straightforward 4-0 victory in their opening match but were challenged by the young pair Yuan Licen / Yuan Yuan. Yuan Licen stood out, in particular, demonstrating some excellent forehand counter but he and Yuan Yuan did not seize the lead. As a result, Fang Bo / Wang Yidi made an incredible comeback and won 7 points straight to seal the deciding 7th game.

3 rounds down, the mixed doubles are now just 1 round away from the main draw. We will know which 8 pairs will advance by tomorrow. Mixed doubles aside, the qualification rounds for men's singles and women's singles will kick off tomorrow!
