2019 Chinese Nationals Day 5 (27 Jul): Hou Yingchao Makes Top 8, Lin And Wang Claimed Mixed Doubles Gold

Day 5 at the 2019 Chinese National Championships, Hou Yingchao proves he's still very competitive as he makes the top 8 at the men's singles of the Chinese Nationals. In the mixed doubles final, Lin Gaoyuan and Wang Manyu crowned mixed doubles national champion with a 4-1 victory over Zhou Qihao and Chen Xingtong

Both seeds of the men's singles, Lin Gaoyuan and Zhou Qihao had faced serious challenges in the men's singles round of 16. Lin Gaoyuan, in particular, had a slow start against 2016 junior national champion Zhao Zhaoyan but as he picked up the pace in the second half of game 2 and secured his shots at the critical points, Lin Gaoyuan won 4-1.

The match between veteran Hou Yingchao and Liu Dingshuo was not streamed but the scores and reports have shed light on the intensity of the match. According to the rules, Hou Yingchao has earned himself a chance to return to the national team but he replied that he would rather focus on competitions in Europe since his playing style and age may not endure training in the national team. Ma Te, another defender in the main draw, advanced to the quarterfinals without competing since Zhou Yu had withdrawn before the match due to a neck injury.

Mixed doubles finals was a big showdown between last year's mixed doubles first runner-up Lin Gaoyuan / Wang Manyu and a new partnership Zhou Qihao / Chen Xingtong. The match started with a closely contested game 1 which ended at 19-17 favoring Zhou and Chen. However, the left-and-right handed combination, Lin and Wang, had a slight edge over the all-right-handed pair since they have the entire table open to them and fewer chances in blocking their partner's way. Lin Gaoyuan / Wang Manyu sealed their victory at 4-1 and claimed the 2019 mixed doubles national champion.

Coming up next on day 6 will be the men's singles quarterfinals, women's singles quarterfinals and semifinals. This will be the battle of the best and you certainly don't want to miss it.
