Quick Notes
April 5
1400:
[T1] Sun Yingsha has no problem playing against a defender. The only game she loses is game 2 which Liu Fei plays a variety of spins.
[T2] Liang Jingkun does not seize the lead in game 1 and lose with a 2-point margin at 11-13. He switches to reverse pendulum serves in game 2, 3 and 4 which create problems for Zhou Yu and put him at a 3-1 lead. Zhou Yu seems to have run out of tactics and loses the game 5.
1445:
[T1] Chen Xingtong starts off a bit slow. Yet as she speeds up her strokes and plays more to Sun Mingyang's forehand, she turns around and wins 4-2.
[T2] Wang Chuqin / Zhou Qihao win 3-1 over 2015 Chinese Youth National Games boys' doubles champion Zhang Yudong / Sun Wen. It is such an enjoyment to watch this match, both pairs play incredible counters at the back of the table, it happens the winning pair has better short games.
1530: BO5 is in play from now on as the athletes have to catch their flight to Beijing
[T1] Yu Ziyang targets at Xu Xin's backhand at it has been the nemesis for many penholders. Game 2 is exceptionally exciting packed with many mind-blowing counter-loops. Xu Xin edges over Yu Ziyang in terms of variations and the ability to counter behind the table.
[T2] Big upset, Wang Manyu 2-3 Liu Fei. Wang Manyu had a tough time on day 1 playing against defender Wu Yang who get injured and ended the match early. She plays against another defender Liu Fei at the last session and struggles to handle the changes of spin and the sudden punches played by Liu.
I hope you have enjoyed the warm-up match coverage and we wish all athletes will take this experience with them and excel in the upcoming 2019 WTTC.
1000:
[T1] A high-quality mixed doubles match. Yu Ziyang / Zhang Rui are not bad but it turns out Xu Xin / Liu Shiwen are way better and ended the match with a straight forward 4-0 victory. Xu Xin / Liu Shiwen will definitely be a huge favourite in the mixed doubles event at 2019 WTTC.
[T2] Lin Gaoyuan / Liang Jingkun struggle in game 1 but have the upper hand in the counter rallies and win 3-1 over Fang Bo / Cheng Jingqi.
1045:
[T1] Ding Ning dominates the competition and win 4-0. The only thing is most of her misses come from her wide forehand.
[T2] A tough match for Wang Manyu / Sun Yingsha as a right-right combination demands more on the athletes' footwork and collaboration. Liu Gaoyang / Sun Mingyang playing the role of Hina Hayata / Ito Mima is 2-0 up after 2 games. Wang / Sun take the initiative in the first ball contact and save 1 game with a significant 11-4 lead in game 3 but doesn't continue the winning momentum in game 4 losing 1-3.
1130:
[T1] Aggressive, agile and determined, Yu Ziyang plays really well in this match. Lin Gaoyuan's speed could put him in the lead but Yu Ziyang shows patience in the match, keeping the rallies going instead of going fast and makes changes in his serves which have earned him critical points to win 4-2 over Lin Gaoyuan
[T2] Zhou Yu / Yan An and Zhou Qihao / Wang Chuqin go neck and neck in the first 2 games, Zhou Qihao / Wang Chuqin make some unforced errors in game 3 and lose the game, 1-2 down going into game 4. The young pairs take the lead in game 4 but the 2013 Asian champion make a comeback with quick follow-ups and smart tactics. A 3-1 victory for the Zhou Yu / Yan An.
That's the end of the morning session of day 2, the afternoon session begins at 1400 (GMT+8) local time,
April 4
1900:
[T1] Wu Yang gives Wang Manyu a hard time. Wang Manyu has some trouble in handling Wu Yang's serve and a beautiful backhand punch from Wu Yang at game 3. Oops! Wu Yang seemed to have twisted her right ankle at the end of game 3 at 10-10. A medical timeout is called. They come back, play the last few points to end game 3 and shake hands to end the match early.
[T2] A close 4-3 win for Lin Gaoyuan. Both Lin Gaoyuan and Xu Chenhao have a slow start. The first few games are filled with unforced errors while the decisive game 7 is a bit better. Lin said, in the post-match interview, he was a bit slow halfway through the match but he was able to win it at the end. He thinks he is more confident leading up to 2019 WTTC as compared with 2017.
1945:
[T1] Lots of powerful strokes from this table. It comes down to who (Liang Jingkun and Zhao Zihao) is more consistent. It's quite a nail-biter at this moment (game 3). Zhao Zihao is a bit off coming into game 4. Liang Jingkun wins 4-2 over Zhao Zihao.
[T2] 3 Youth Olympic champions in the frame with Liu Gaoyang (2014 YOG champion) commenting. It is said, this match is to prepare Sun Yingsha to play against Kasumi Ishikawa of Japan! A very good start for Sun Yingsha leading 2-0 and being able to play those wide angles after those powerful strokes from Gu Yuting are just impressive. Gu Yuting goes aggressive in the receives and levels the game to 2-2. Sun Yingsha seems to be a bit lost in game 5 but save 4 match points in game 6, lovely! Gu Yuting is on fire in game 7 and wins 4-3 over Sun Yingsha. A must-see match!!!
2030:
[T1] One of the most anticipated matches of the day. Chinese top mixed doubles Xu Xin / Liu Shiwen versus Zhou Yu / Yan An (the 2013 men's doubles Asian champion). The quick speed from the mixed pair seems to have put the men's doubles in trouble in game 2 and 3. However, when it comes down to the long rallies, Xu Xin missed a few shots especially in his attempts to play the step around forehand in the later games, losing 4-2 to the Asian champion pair.
[T2] Some adjustments, Wang Manyu is up instead of Ding Ning. The first three games look straight forward but it is actually a very close call. Short-pip player Sun Mingyang's backhand punches are brutal like Ito Mima. Ouch! Wang Manyu is persistence enough to win 4-2 over Sun Mingyang.
