Surprise, Surprise! 17-year old Miu Hirano Makes History
If winning the women's world cup title in the absence of the Chinese players was just a fluke, Miu Hirano proved herself in this championships beating Chinese players Ding Ning, Zhu Yuling and Chen Meng in the women's singles, and walked away with a well-deserved gold medal. Miu is quick and good at making wide angles. Her serves had also given huge problems to the Chinese players. No wonder Kong Linghui, the chief coach of the Chinese national women's team, said Miu is China's no.1 opponent. Miu Hirano is definitely one to watch in Düsseldorf Worlds which will be held from May 29 to June 5.
Olympic Champions Bow Out Early
In the men's singles, Ma Long and Xu Xin ousted in the round of 32 and quarterfinals respectively. Korea's Jeong Sangeun upset Ma Long with a 3-1 (11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 11-6) victory. His forehand stood out in the match while Ma Long made a lot of unforced error, especially after receiving a service warning from the umpire in the fourth set. Jeong fought strongly in the later competitions defeating Yoshimura Maharu (8-11, 13-15, 11-9, 11-9) and played a sensational comeback against Koki Niwa (6-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 13-11). In the finals, Fan Zhendong ended Jeong's footstep with a 3-0 sweep. It was a shock defeat for Xu Xin. His signature forehand loop was not helping him to win the match against Koki Niwa, while his nemesis, backhand, was giving him huge problems. Koki Niwa beat Xu Xin (12-10, 5-11, 11-8, 11-7).
Fearless Japanese Mixed Doubles Makes the Finals
Japan's Morizono Masataka and Ito Mima knocked out the Chinese doubles, Fang Bo and Wang Manyu in semi-finals after making an incredible recovery in the decisive 5th set. The Chinese had a 7-3 lead in the 5th set and held 3 match points at 10-7. When the home crowd cheer for the doubles, thinking victory was just one step away, the Japanese closed down the gap and won the match 13-11. Yet in the finals, other Chinese doubles, Zhou Yu and Chen Xingtong did not let that repeat again and beat Morizono Masataka and Ito Mima (11-9, 11-7, 9-11,11-8).
Chinese Dominates the Team and Doubles
It was a great start for the Chinese team in the 2017 Asian Championships. Both the men's team and women's team topped the podium without losing a game. The Chinese also dictated the men's doubles and women's doubles winning golds and silvers in the events.
Zhang Jike's Comeback
Zhang Jike had a crooked start in the team event. He played 5 full sets and beat DPRK's Kang Wi Hun (11-6, 11-13, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8) in his first match. When people had doubts about Zhang Jike's ability to finish the championships, he showed the crowd he is among the best. In men's singles quarterfinal, Zhang Jike played against Lin Gaoyuan who earned his tickets to Worlds a few months ago. It was a tension-packed match as if it was the Olympic finals. Zhang Jike has the edge over the inexperience Lin Gaoyuan and won the match (11-7, 6-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7). The semifinal was a well-played match. Despite his loss to the powerful Fan Zhendong, he gave the crowd an entertaining exhibition point at the end of the match in return!
