The Medals for the 2017 Asian Championship
Source: CTTA |
Do they look familiar? A 2.0 version of the medals for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games (I think the Olympic medals are much better though)? The medals of the 2017 Asian Championship are inlaid with jade from Yunnan. The organizer hope to promote the culture of jade through this opportunity.
Indeed, sports events are great opportunity to promote sports and the culture of the hosting nation, not to mention the Asian Championship, one of the top level competitions held in Asia. We can see the Chinese national team has tired hard to improve and promote the sport, especially after being super popular after the Rio Olympics. However, more can be done by the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA). There are not much information about the domestic meets, take the Chinese National Games Prelims as an example, the source of the competition results, to my surprise, is from the Weibo (the Chinese Twitter) of the journalists and information often lag behind. Language barrier is another issue. It is understandable that the Chinese report their news and competitions in Chinese, since that is the official language. But providing English version of the news will certainly help promote the sport to more people and encourage interactions across nations. Isn't that one of the goals of the CTTA? Well, progress takes time and commitment. Let's wait and see.
