Throwback Thursday: Pre-Olympic Women's World Cup in Numbers


With team and individual qualification slots feeding into next year's Olympic Games, the pre-Olympic edition of the Women's World Cup might mean a little more than just a World Cup. The 2019 Women's World Cup, held from 18-20 October in Chengdu, China, invites 20 athletes representing the best of their continent. They will go through 2 stages with the most exciting knockout stage to be played across the weekend. Who will walk away with the champion? Can the World Cup champion translate it into an Olympic champion? We can't foresee the future but we can always review history. Let's look back at the Women's World Cup which were played in the pre-Olympic years!

The 2019 Chinese National Championships will take place from 23 July to 2 August, in Tianjin, China. Top Chinese paddlers will gather in Tianjin in the coming 11 days, vying for 5 national titles. This year, 2019 Asian Cup returns to Japan, as Yokohama will play host to the Asian qualification tournament for 2019 World Cup from 5-7 AprilThe field is headlined by Ma Long, who went on a 4-month hiatus recovering from his injuries and has just had a golden comeback performance at the Qatar Open. The other players in attendance include last year's title-holder Fan Zhendong and Zhu Yuling and other top 14 men and 15 women from Asia.

What comes before the 2018 World Team Championships? You may have guessed it right. The Commonwealth Games in the full swing but what comes much-anticipated is the 2018 Asian Cup being held from 6 to 8 April in Yokohama, Japan, the host city of 2009 World Championships. 16 men and 16 women from Asian countries will be vying for the Asian Cup title and make their shot to the Individual World Cup scheduled in September (women) and October (men) this year.
