Qualifying 2019 Marvellous 12 -- Results for Stage 1 of the Chinese Trials


The qualifying round for the 2019 Marvellous 12, Chinese Trials for 2019 WTTC, is scheduled from 12 February to 16 February in Beijing, China. 15 men and 16 women strive for making the top 6 in order to qualify for the Marvellous 12 and continue their hopes to make the 2019 World Championships squad.

31 Chinese national team members take part in an internal round-robin competition from 12-16 February to qualify for the 2019 Marvellous 12. The competition is played under the best of 5 game format and the top 6 of the 15 men qualified. The women have more complicated selection criteria. The 2 highest ranked pips players are guaranteed spots at the Marvellous 2 and the remaining 4 spots are dedicated to the remaining highest ranked players.

It's everyone's game in the men's field. The top 3 tied the number of victories and has to come down a tie-breaker. Zhao Zihao, Xu Chenhao and Fang Bo ranked first to third respectively with 11 wins and 3 losses. Fourth for Zhou Kai, trailing behind is Yu Ziyang and Xue Fei. Yan An is put in last minute to substitute for Ma Long's withdrawal due to a knee injury.

Sun Yingsha leads the field with a winning streak of 15 matches. Trailing behind her are Chen Xingtong, Sun Yingsha and Gu Yuting. The final 2 spots are designated to pips players, Sun Mingyang who placed fifth and He Zhuojia finishing seventh.

Ma Long, Xu Xin, Fan Zhendong, Lin Gaoyuan, Liang Jingkun, Wang Chuqin for the men, Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen, Zhu Yuling, Chen Meng, Wang Manyu and Wu Yang will directly qualify to the 2019 Marvellous 12. While Zhang Jike decided to sit out the trials due to lack of regular training.

The 2019 Marvellous 12 will be held from 28 February to 3 March in Shenzhen, China. It will air on (Tencent Sports: Table 1Table 2) (Table 3 Chinese live blog only), (Pingpangwang: Table 1Table 2and partially on CCTV 5 beginning at 13:00 local time. The Non-Marvellous 12

Other national team members take part in the promotional and relegation competition held in late-February.

The men have their promotional and relegation competition on 21-25 February. 4 B Team members joined 11 A Team members in the round-robin competition and the top 11 stay in / promote to the A Team. Liu Dingshuo heads the field with 13 wins and 1 loss and 15-year-old Xiang Peng from the B Team gets promoted.

The women have theirs on 23 February. 3 of the 4 athletes would get a spot on the A Team and the spots go to Qian Tianyi, Fan Siqi and Liu Weishan.
