CNT New Coaching Team Announced

Liu Guoliang returned to the world of table tennis with a new role, the president of CTTA, a few months ago. In his new role, he works out a strategic plan for preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which includes a performance appraisal system and announces the new coaching team structure on 25 February.

Support Behind National Team for 2020
The national team will not be preparing for the 2020 Olympics alone. According to the strategic plan, Liu Guoliang is the chief conductor of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics preparation. Getting behind the national team are the supporting team, the command team and the consultant team. The supporting team is responsible for research and development, medical support, physical training, recovery etc. The command team comprising national team coaches would carry out the strategic plan and instruct training of the key athletes. Lastly, the consultant team would have former national team coaches and celebrated athletes, such as Lu Yuansheng, Li Xiaodong, Wang Nan, Zhang Yining, Li Xiaoxia, Li Sun, Qin Zhijian, developing the strategic plan, monitoring the coaching team and assessing the performances of the athletes.

New Coaching Team Structure
Several familiar names join the new coaching team. Chen Qi, Qiu Yike and Guo Yan who coached in the provincial team after their retirement from their athletic career are now part of the national coaching team. Coach Chen Bin (Ding Ning's former coach) and Zhang Qin leave the national team due to family and personal health reason.  There will be a farewell ceremony dedicated to them at the Marvellous 12. The structure of the coaching team is as follow:

The team has not announced the specific arrangement regarding which athlete will train under a particular coach because the coaches and athletes need time to familiarize with each other. The coaching team may be finalized after the Asian Cup or Qatar Open. There might be an increase in the number of coaches on the men's B Team. That being said, Chen Bin mentioned at the Marvellous 12 that some athletes have confirmed to work with coaches they know well. For example, Wang Hao coaches Fan Zhendong, Liu Heng partners with Lin Gaoyuan, Ma Lin works with Liu Shiwen, Guo Yan coaches Ding Ning, Qiu Yike works with Zhu Yuling etc.

Performance Appraisal Scheme-Carrot and Stick

Coming alongside the strategic plan is the performance appraisal system which is designed to assess performances of coaches in the A team on a yearly basis. Coaches earn points according to their achievements in international competitions. They get payment of bonus if they pass the target and receive a penalty if they score below 12000 points. Any score within the range of 12000-14000 is safe and they can score a maximum of 18000 points. In order to show his determination and confidence in coaches, Liu Guoliang said he will take no salary for a year if any coaches fail to meet 12000 points
