Quick Notes
1. Zhang Jike will not compete at the championships.
2. Stated in Beijing Daily, Ma Long will be competing in the team event only. Team Beijing has invited Qin Zhijian, the former national men's team head coach, to help Ma Long prepare for the tournament.
3. Fan Zhendong has withdrawn due to health issues. A blow for PLA, which was considered the huge favourite of the meet (bronze medalist in 2017) and now fail to advance to the next stage after 2 disappointing losses in the group stage.
4. Shanghai has won the team title in the last 3 nationals and the 2017 Chinese National Games. Will Xu Xin, who will be competing in the team event only, help the team to defend their title again? Bowed out in round of 16 to Sichuan, which place second at 2017 Chinese National Games
5. Possible early encounter for Liu Shiwen and Zhu Yuling in Group A. Guangdong almost qualified to the main round at the 2017 Chinese National Games but failed due to lacking a solid player to seal the third point. Can they turn things around at this Championships?
6. Ding Ning will decide whether to take part in the singles event after the team competition. Yes, we wil see her again in the singles event.
7. Young players He Zhuojia, Sun Yingsha, Wang Yidi and Chen Xingtong will battle out in Group H.
8. Post-00 paddler, Zhang Binyue (Jiangsu) upset Ding Ning (Beijing) 3-0 in women's team Round of 16
9. Shocking defeat for the 3-time national champion Shanghai, it was a rematch between the finalists at 2017 Chinese National Games but this time the results are flip-flopped. 2003-born penholder Kuang Li is impressive with his reverse backhand flip while Xu Xin's performance is sub-par losing 1-3 to former national team member Xu Ruifeng.
10. MT: Beijing pranced to a gold medal in the men's team with six 3-0 victories from the group stage to the finals. Starred with Ma Long, Wang Chuqin and Yan An, the team is super well-balanced, pretty unbelievable with only a few challenges encountered in the men's team finals against Guangdong. In the team finals, Ma Long was enjoyable to watch, as always, and veteran Zhang Chao's experience forced rising star Wang Chuqin to play a 5-game thriller. The point of the match, however, may have belonged to Yan An and Lin Gaoyuan who played an incredible rally which included every trick in the table tennis world at 8-4 in game 5 in the team finals.
11. WT: What feels better than winning a women's team national champion? Well, winning the title in front of the home crowd! Liaonging , the home team could not have a better opening than they would have hoped for. Confidently leading 2-0, the third match played between Wen Jia and Gu Yuting was exceptionally breath-taking. Gu Yuting and Chen Meng saved Shandong's hope for topping the podium, leaving the suspense to the 5th match decider. However Wang Yidi is the home team hero tonight as she sealed the victory after 5 exciting games.
12. This is the end of the team event, please check our new post to follow more details about the upcoming singles and doubles events.
