Brief Notes
[3 May]: Biggest upset of the day, 2005-born Lin Shidong defeats Xu Xin with a 2-point margin at the decisive 5th game. This may cost Xu Xin's chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Lin Shidong will make to the next stage if he loses less than 2 singles matches in the following matches in group stage.

  1. Please update me these results, I've been waiting since this morning 😁

    1. I'm terribly sorry. I've to work during daytime and could only update once a day at night (in Asia time zone). Please bear with me. I usually try to include links direct to live scoring but there're none this time. The results are announced via different accounts from Chinese social media platform. Once again a massive thank you for following our updates.

  2. Thanks very much for the wonderful results service you are providing. At last we saw WCQ coming back to his fluent best, a good job, as I think XX and ML (in spite of all his admirers) are past their best. Maybe LSD will soon develop into a rival for FZD. Similarly in the ladies, with DN absent and LSW struggling to recapture all her zest, hopes lie upon CM and SYS. But it’s good to see ZYL making her way back to the top after her mystery illness and she may yet be able to challenge for a place in the team. At her best I think she would be able to give CM and SYS a run for their money.

  4. So he won't go to the Olympics? Does that mean that China's places for the Olympics are already booked? (BTW it might be better for all to stay at home, as Tokyo is a crisis zone at the moment.) How many players can China send to the Worlds?

    1. According to a post-meet interview of Liu Guoliang, this is not an Olympic selection trials. It's a trials for CTTSL, WTT and Worlds.

The nominative roster for Tokyo Olympics is meticulously decided by the national team coaches based on athletes' performances throughout the entire Olympic cycle (2017-2021) and has been submitted to relevant committee for further necessary action. The thing is the Chinese National Team tends to make the official announcement of the Olympic Team at the very last minute because this can keep athletes motivated throughout the preparation period and shorten the time of getting upset for those who didn't make the team.

Liu also rest assured that Xu Xin/ Liu Shiwen are the best mixed doubles pairs in China and will go to the Olympics despite the loss. The national team coaches have confidence in them. He said the pairs were spectacular during training. They can win all mixed doubles pairs with 2-3 points giving away in advance at each game, and can even defeat men's doubles in team training. The problem is they are too confident at the Trials and their pre-match preparation is not thorough enough. "Losing matches itself is not ideal but one must learn from mistakes and take the bad with the good," Liu said after having a review with the Olympic mixed doubles preparation team, Xu Xin, Liu Shiwen, and the two coaches Ma Lin and Chen Qi.

It might be too early to say if Zhou Qihao has booked his place to the Worlds because it seems that this Trials is a series and the tickets to CTTSL, WTT and Worlds will be decided based on the overall ranking points (details included in our previous article Everything about the 2021 Chinese Trials cum Mock Olympics). Liu thinks it is too risky to determine the roster with 1 trials. A series of competitions would allow coaches to have better judgement over athletes' ability and consistency. So we might have to wait and see the next leg of the Trials series.

Liu would also love to see innovations in the coming leg (incorporating multiple functions to the meet), so that everyone is the star of the meet, not just a practice partner. He would also like to invite non-Chinese players to join the meet, for example having Mima Ito rank herself among the Chinese or having Lin Shidong, a 2005-born rising star of the meet, to play a match against Harimoto Tomokazu.

  5. Thanks! That's very informative about how the CNT is managed and the timing of the Olympic announcements, also elucidating Liu's comments from the interview.
