Catch Up: Japan Trials for 2020 World Team Championships (Stage 1)
The 2020 World Team Championships is still 5 months away from now but the Japanese Team starts the first stage of the selection process early on 22-23 October.
The 12 men and 12 women taking part in the Trials are divided into groups of 6. Players play each other in a round-robin format before they contest for the final standings by playing against player of another group with the same ranking in group stage; and the top 3 players of each gender in the final screening qualify for stage 2 of the Trials.
Togami Shunsuke, Hirano Yuki and Jin Takuya secured the top 3 spots of the men's field; and Nagasaki Miyu, Idesawa Kyoka and Marumoto Ayami for the women. The top 3 aside, do keep an eye on Harimoto Miwa and Matsushima Sora who fell short from qualifying for the next stage as they are promising young prospects in Japan table tennis.
