Catch Up: Korean Trials For 2019 Asian Championships--Youth Continue to Rise in Preparation for 2020


While the 2019 European Games is just around the corner, the Korean Team held trials to pick its team for the 2019 Asian Championships which also acts as an Olympic qualifier for athletes from the Asian region on 19-21 June.

Both the men's and women's team have young standouts. 19-year-old An Jaehyun continues to show promise after a successful World Championships debut where he won a men's singles bronze medal in April. He placed third in the trials with 9 wins and 4 losses behind Jeoung Youngsik who won 13 matches straight and Kim Minhyeok placed second with 11 wins and 2 losses. They together with Lee Sangsu and Jang Woojin, the 2 players with the highest world ranking, will make the 2019 Asian Championships squad while the national team will nominate one more athlete for the Championships on 26 June.

In the women's field, Korea's up-and-coming prodigy 15-year-old Shin Yubin earned her ticket to the 2019 Asian Championships finishing third with 8 wins and 3 losses behind Yang Haeun (10 wins 1 loss) and Lee Eunhye (9 wins 2 losses). Meanwhile, Jeon Jihee and Seo Hyowon gained their places by virtue of their world ranking. Similar to the men's team, the national team will nominate one more athlete to the squad and announce the finalized roster on 26 June.

The selection meet for both the men and women adopted a round-robin system. The top 3 athletes of each gender secure their tickets to the 2019 Asian Championships which takes place on 15-22 September in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
