2019 Chinese Nationals Day 3 (25 Jul): Mixed Doubles Seeds Fall, Early Exit For Wang Chuqin And Sun Yingsha
Notable names fell on the third day of qualification at the 2019 Chinese Nationals. Underdogs challenged mixed doubles top seeds and young players overthrew big names in singles qualification round.
XD: Lucky Loser Shocked Out Defending Champion
2018 Asian Games mixed doubles champion also the defending national mixed doubles champion Wang Chuqin/Sun Yingsha made a shocking early exit in the mixed doubles round of 16. The defending champion looked burnt out in the match making many unforced errors and lost 2-4 to the 'lucky losers' Xia Yizheng/Che Xiaoxi who, in fact, placed third at last year's nationals. The no.6 seeds Yu Ziyang/Chen Meng also did not survive their opening round in mixed doubles, as they suffered a 0-4 loss in opposition to Xue Fei/Zhang Rui.
On the other hand, Liang Jingkun/Zhu Yuling were on the verge of bowing out. The no.5 seeds were not quite used to playing against the defensive style of Ma Te/Liu Fei and were 3-1 down. They started to turn things around after saving game 5 at 18-16 while Ma Te went a bit too aggressive in game 7 and the game went by in favour of Liang Jingkun/Zhu Yuling. While Fang Bo/Wang Yidi failed to survive the 7-game thriller like they did in the past 2 days experiencing a 4-3 defeat to the underdogs of the Nationals Zhao Zhaoyan/Huang Fanzhen.
MS: Early Exits for Prominent Names
The biggest upsets of all being Yan An, he was beaten 4-3 by Zhu Jinpeng in round 2 of qualification. Following that, national team member Zhou Kai was knocked out in round 3 losing 4-1 to Wang Bo. Surprise defeats were launched but the evergreen Chinese defender Hou Yingchao remains in the run with a clean 4-0 victory over Ren Hao in round 2 and a 4-1 victory over up-and-coming young player Xi Sheng in round 3. He will be playing against Wei Shihao, who benefited from the withdrawal of Hao Shuai in round 2, in the final round of qualification tomorrow.
Coming up tomorrow are the mixed doubles quarterfinals and semifinals. The race for positions in the main draw for the singles events will be closely contested as well. Set your clock and don't miss these exciting matches.
